Blandine Grelier Galy, a French luthier, was born into a family deeply connected to music and the arts. She began studying the violin at the Orléans Conservatory of Music at the age of 8, where she quickly showed an affinity for both music and craftsmanship. Gifted with perfect pitch and an exceptional ability to discern intervals as tiny as a comma, she discovered the ideal way to combine technique, sensitivity and tradition through the luthier profession. In 2000, at the age of 18, Blandine enrolled in the National School of Violin Making in Mirecourt, the birthplace of this ancient French tradition. During her time here, she underwent work experience at workshops in Mirecourt, Paris and Orléans, specialising in instrument building and restoration. She was awarded the Diploma in the Art and Craft of Luthiery in 2004.
In 2005, she moved to Madrid, where she worked at Laurent López’s workshop, focusing on the restoration of antique string quartet instruments. This offered the opportunity to work on original instruments of the great Italian masters, including Stradivari, Guarneri, Amati, Montagnana and Testore. Among Blandine’s most notable experiences was the maintenance of Pablo Sarasate’s renowned Stradivarius violin, under the direction of Laurent López, and belonging to the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid.
In 2014, she opened her own workshop in Madrid, before moving to Sentmenat in Catalonia, where she continues her craft with passion and precision. She currently works with musicians and students from the Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC), orchestras such as the Vallès Symphony Orchestra (OSV) and the City of Barcelona and Catalonia National Orchestra (OBC), as well as music conservatories and schools throughout Catalonia. In addition to the building and restoration of violins, violas, cellos and violas da gamba (viols), she maintains double basses and rehairs and sells bows. Blandine uses modern diagnostic methods, including tomography, to protect the value and integrity of the instruments, earning a reputation as a reliable and exceptionally skilled luthier.
